Gardening

Three days ago the only thing I had planted in the garden was the luffa... and due to a cold snap all eight died. I kept four in the house "just in case" and I'm so happy that I did. I planted one yesterday as a test and this morning it still looks okay, not great but I think it will live. We had rain in the night but I'm hoping for hot, hot, weather today. We've actually had rain for quite a few days in a row, and it's been much too wet to plant anything in the garden. Usually by this time everything's in and up and growing by now, such a strange year... So far I've planted about 18 tomato plants and three different kinds of peppers, hopefully I'll get cucumbers, beans, and peas in today. Then there's carrots, squash, spinach, radish, etc., etc. Jevan has been pretty good at helping me and has even learned how to run the rototiller.
He does pretty good until he gets to the fence, and because I haven't shown him reverse yet, he'll then run over and asked me to move it. He's been having a blast and I get all the weeds tilled in. I felt pretty bad for him yesterday tho'. He was hollering at me through the window and I told him to come out and talk to me. He came running through the garden gate, hand clenched tight, and said "Mama, Mama, I got a hummingbird in the window!" He was so excited. He then said that the bird wouldn't fly away... as he opened his hand I could see that the little bird was dead. I explained to him that he can't hold the bird so tight and then told him we could bury it in the garden. As I put the bird's body in the ground I looked up and saw that Jevan had tears streaming down his face, he then said, "Sniff, sniff, I'm gonna miss the little feller Mama." His whole body was shaking and he felt so bad. I hugged him and told him the bird has gone to heaven. Needless to say I don't think he'll be rescuing any more birds out of the window... We're having a party today! Sydney's birthday was on Wednesday and Jevan's is today. Sydney turned 10 and Jevan is the big kindergarten 5 today! Two more months and, for the first time in a long time, I will have eight whole hours without an interruption! Oh Lord I don't know what I'm going to do :) (I'll think of something). An update on Blue. He's doing great! He shows no ill effects from his injuries and is bouncing around like his old self. Yesterday Sydney snapped a picture of him in our garden.

Bless Jevan's heart - here he was so proud to be helping the bird. I remember Zachary once trying to "save" a tiny frog and suffocating it in the process. There were plenty of tears that day, too.

He looks great pushing that tiller!
And Blue looks good - I'm so glad he recovered!

I've not planted a single garden item this year. It has been too crazy: crazy schedule, crazy weather - too much going on. Plants have died and I just said, "forget it!" So, my Topsy Turvy's are not being used this year and I'm totally ok with that! lol! I will miss having fresh tomatoes and cucs, though...

Sorry I haven't emailed - it really has been very busy here - but I haven't forgotten you and I will find some time to sit and email you soon!

Take care!

Blue has such a grin!

So sorry about the hummer -- some of those hard lessons of childhood... he meant so well, though. Poor sweetie.

Oh my! You should have warned me before I read this. It had me crying so hard I couldn't see to read it all at the time. What a life learning experience for him. Poor little guy and I know he is so very sensitive. I am glad he had his birthday party later to take his mind to happy times.

Sorry to hear about your garden. I am amazed at how similar our weather is. I always think of BC as being "the golden land" of warmth and sunshine and flowers blooming in February. Apparently that is just at the very bottom of the province and not in the mountains.
Sorry to hear about Jevan's life lesson. At least he showed the proper reaction. I've known some kids that would think that it was funny. Scary beasts. It shows that you are doing a good job raising him.
And Blue does look happy to be alive.

Dear old blue, he has a lovely smile doesn't he?

Poor little Jevan ,I expect he will forget that before long. My son remembers very little about his infant years.
