Most everyday I get what I call "The Wrinkle Egg." I have no idea what causes it; all my chickens eat the same thing, my coop is clean, none of my chickens are sickly, and of course I was just darn curious. Now I didn't think it was much of a big deal until I decided to look it up online. I was surprised when I saw one picture and the responses to it. Very few people believed it was real! They thought it was soaked in vinegar, or numerous other concoctions to get the wrinkle effect. Well I'm a "straight truth" kind a gal and I have not doctored this picture in any way (other than reduced it so it wouldn't take forever to load), nor have I done some mad scientific experiment to get the egg to look this way. Some days the wrinkles are a lot worse, other days not so bad, the egg's shell is as hard as all the other eggs. I always keep this egg and it is never taken to town because some people just simply wouldn't eat it. I do, and if I cracked it into a bowl along side one of my other eggs I highly doubt anyone could tell the difference. I've had eggs with no shell, just sort of a soft layer holding it together, and I do throw those back to the chickens. Usually I get that when my chickens are just starting to lay, as well as little bitty teeny eggs with no yolks, and HUGE monster eggs that are usually double yolkers. After they lay for a few months everything usually falls into a routine, all the eggs are about the same size and shape depending on which breed it comes from, except this one. I had no luck online finding a cause, and other than the shell it's really a good egg :)

this really makes me miss having chickens. :) We woudln;t get ones wrinkled that bad, but we did get some that were mighty odd looking.
Frightening, vaguely painful-looking (for the chicken), and downright disturbing! Did you find out what causes it?

Hey that egg looks like one i find in my coop everyday. i always wondered why to. i am glad someone else gets them too, we eat them and there seems to be nothing wrong with them people sure have comments when they see it sitting on the counter though.

Ouch. That must have not felt so good as the egg was..er...erm..."coming down/out". Is it edible? You did mention it was a good egg though you didn't say in what sense. Good to eat? Did it taste different?

I just meant it's as good of an egg as the ones that aren't wrinkled :) Once you break it open you wouldn't see any difference, we eat it!

At first I felt like I had to hide the thing LOL! Good to know I'm not the only one who gets one!
I guess the chicken rested too many times between pushing....gross.
Don't throw the eggs to the chickens or they may start to eat them when they lay them. Just a skin and no shell means they need oyster shells or bake your egg shells in the oven and mash to a powder and put the egg powder with their food.
