Plums, Two Great Ideas

I was going to throw them to the chickens! Really I was. Awhile ago I had picked plums over at Grandma's and made a dehydrator full. Then I let the rest sit on my canning table... staring at me, daring me to do something with them... but what? I don't like canning plums because I find they're the type of fruit that wastes space in jars. I hate to see anything go to waste so I weeded out the good ones and threw them in the steamer, pits, skins, and all. I ended up tapping off almost 3 quarts of juice! This surprised me because I didn't really think there was a whole lot there. The kids immediately drank the 1 quart bottle that I had watered down and added a bit of Splenda to, this left me with one two-quart jar. I stuck it in the fridge and wondered what to do with it.

Yesterday I grabbed the bottle and decided to make some Plum Syrup and Plum Jelly. You know those expensive little bottles of fruit syrup you buy at the grocery store? Well no more! This stuff is so good! It's thick, has a beautiful colour, and tastes great. The kids and I ate it with waffles this morning and we polished off half a jar :)

The recipe was pretty simple, only three ingredients. I doubled the recipe and made 4 pints but here's the original, if you make it you'll end up with 2 pints.

Plum (or any fruit) Syrup
2 cups juice
1/2 cup white corn syrup
3 cups sugar

Combine all three ingredients into a large pot. Bring to a boil. Boil for 15 minutes. Turn off heat, skim foam, and pour into sterilized jars. Process for 15 minutes in a hot water bath.

I still had 4 cups of plum juice left so I decided to make jelly. I needed 5 1/2 cups of juice and I added some of the pear/apple juice I had to make the full amount. The jelly is very similar to the grape jelly I made.

Hey Kansas,

I have so many plums I don't know what to do with all of them. I have made plum butter to infinitum and jelly too. This looks good, I think I will make some tonight, yum!

Hi NEO
Even without a steamer this could be made, I'd just strain everything through a jelly bag :) Let me know how it turns out!

Hi Kansas...

This looks so good. Our plum tree has given us so much in the last 20 some years and this year maybe about 6 plums. I never thought to try syrup but what a great idea. Can't wait to try yours.

Love Ya!

STOP!
STOP!
I'm swooning over here! Really! Could you stop with all of the fresh fruit. I am soooooo jealous! We get apples here. Well strawberries too. And black and blue berries. I have even seen one lone plum tree ( they were bitter though)
Maybe I shouldn't complain so much. But those pictures of the apricots and cherries. Swoon. Dripping from the branches! Double swoon!! Thunk.

Lovely pics! I enjoyed the post on the steamer tutorial even though I do not own one. Maybe someday! :)

Also, I had my meme all typed up that you tagged me for but then it just vanished. Gone, with no warning! I thought it was a fun meme though and will give it another go soon. :)

I made the plum syrup, delicious! Thanks for the recipe, I have already shared the syrup around to the family, and I still have about 25 pounds of plums on the counter and about 4 cups of plum juice waiting to be made into something yummy.
There is probably 50 pounds or more of plumbs still on that tree, I hate to see them go to waste, but I am plum tired.

This sounds so great my girls will love it! Thanks so much for the idea, I will get to it tomorrow. I have been canning so many tomatoes, I did some plum jelly today and doing this syrup tomorrow will be a nice change of pace! If anyone else has any other ideas for plums I would love to hear them!
