St'wan (Drying Fish)

We made st'wan two years ago and did a pretty good job, but there's a person in town that does it the best and I'm always willing to learn :)

Last Sunday Mary Ann, an elder from Bridge River Indian Reserve, came out and showed us how to prepare sockeye salmon for drying. This woman amazes me with her knowledge and strength. Every morning at 5:30 she walks to the river, catches 3 or 4 fish and then walks home. I'm sure she must be in her 60's but I really didn't want to ask. The speed in which she fillets the fish tells me that she's been doing this for many, many years.

It was great to learn from the best and I appreciate Mary Ann for coming out.

This was totally awesome video. I just love to see the way they do things. She is pretty quick and looks very confident with that knife.
