Darn Coyote!

I think I need the "Roadrunner" around here.  The other morning we were sitting at the kitchen table and I saw something flash by the glass doors in the living room.  The doors open to my garden which is fenced in.  For a split second I thought it was a coyote, but then second guessed myself and thought nah it wouldn't be that close to the house.  I quickly got up and ran to the doors, sure enough there it was.  One of the biggest coyotes I had seen in a long time.  I hollered at Hubby to grab the gun!  He went running for the bedroom safe and I kept an eye on the coyote.

Within a minute Teddy & Yeller come screaming around the corner of the house madly sniffing the ground.  They didn't see the coyote but they could sure smell him.  They followed his trail, even though the animal was a mere 10 yards from them.  Blue was having nothing to do with sniffing and when he spotted him he was off like a shot.  He jumped the garden fence and was in hot pursuit!  The coyote ran, and he ran fast!  In the meantime Teddy & Yeller finally saw him and took chase.

By this time Hubby was back with the gun.  There's a chair that sits in front of the glass doors and Jevan and I were squished over to the chair as Hubby laid the gun alongside the open doors.  We covered our ears and BANG,... BANG!  Right now the field is covered in cows and getting a bead on the coyote was rather difficult, especially with three dogs in tow.  After the shots I had to laugh at Teddy, he did a quick reverse and was heading straight back to the house, obviously he doesn't like the sound of gun fire.

Hubby missed the coyote, and unfortunately we quickly found out that the coyote killed one of our chickens; "Black Girl," Sydney's favourite pet chicken.  Here's a few pics of the two of them together before her dreadful demise.

Mama Banty has also disappeared and we're not sure what has happened to her.  It sounds as if the coyote was pretty busy around the ranch, my BIL killed the coyote the next morning up at his hen house.

Oh, no! Poor Syd. I'm so sorry you lost one of your laying hens. Are you going to do something with the coyote hide? Or is it too small?

I'm sorry to hear this. Glad somebody got him. Do they usually cause problems like this?

Oh. Suddenly, I'm not so envious of your place. Actually, most of the envy over your view disappeared when you spoke about doing the pipes ;-)

Sorry to hear about Black Girl. And I hope that mama banty is just in hiding and will come home soon.

Oh, I don't like Coyotes..
We have them REALLY bad out here too.

I am sorry to hear that it got one of your chickens (I am always afraid that is going to happen here.)

I am still working on my husband to let me get a LGD for my goats and chickens (right now he says NO way but maybe some day he'll change his mind.)

Oh, I tagged you for a Meme. You don't have to do it of course.

Tadmack, we don't do anything with the hide. Coyotes are pretty raggy (is that a word?) around here and are usually disposed of.

Davimack, actually a couple of years ago, when Pops & Grandma were out of town, a coyote got in and killed over a dozen of her hens. The dogs usually keep them at bay but once in awhile you get a really hungry one and, unfortunately, has to be killed.
